History of Tirta Gangga Park
Tirta Gangga Karangasem is a kind of royal water park which belongs to the Karangasem kindom which is located 83 km away from Denpasar to the north. This water park was built on 1948 by the king of Karangasem kingdom, A A. Ngurah Ketut Karangasem. The name of Tirta Gangga water park is taken from the word Tirta which means water and Gangga which is a name of famous river in India. According to the local Hindu people, the water from Tirta Gangga spring water is claimed as holy water. This water park designed from the combination of Balinese and Chinese architecture. Before built into water park, this spring water has already used by the local people for daily needs.
The fascinating point of this temple is Water Park with labyrinth and fountain and surrounded by statues and dense park. On 1963, this place is ruined because of Mount Agung eruption. But then, rebuild again with the exactly same architect. This 1, 2 ha park is contains three level of grounds lies from east to west. In the middle ground, Bwah level, there is Nawa Sanga fountain which is elegantly built. In Bhur level, in the left side, straight from the entrance there is small water park with an island in the middle. Moreover, there is terraced fountain which is surrounded by statues and fancy carved ornaments. In the Tirta Gangga park area, some places is considered as holy places such as the spring water, tower of water, fortress building, fountain, flowers and trees.
The existence of Tirta Gangga also symbolizes a reflection of royal culture pattern and the surrounding people which places water in the vital position. In broad way, this religious park is a representation of harmonic relation between human, nature and culture which is full of religious belief.
