The Location of Ulun Danu Temple
The name of Ulun Danu Temple or usually called Ulun Danu Temple is taken from its location which is on the side of Beratan Lake. Located in the Bedugul plateau which is approximately 1, 239 meter height above the sea level, this geographical condition provides this temple with cool weather.
History of Ulun Danu Temple
Literally, Ulun Danu Temple is a temple on the middle of Beratan Lake and is dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa and other Gods which preserve the lake. Local folklore also believes that this second biggest temple after Besakih temple is the place to worship Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in His prestige as the God of prosperity. Besides, this temple also used to worship the Goddess who resides in Beratan Lake, Dewi Laksmi, the Goddess of fertility and beautiful things. Moreover, Local people appreciate Beratan Lake as Pura Kahyangan Jagat as it also functions as the main water source for agricultural activity in the surrounding area. It also the place for Hindu people from other area, level, and profession get together to worship.
The function of Ulun Danu Temple as place to worship is represented by the existence of some worship building or in local language called pelinggih. In between those pelinggih, there is Pelebahan Pura Tengahing Segara and Pelebahan pelinggih Lingga Petak which the location protrudes to the lake. The unique postion of the lake makes it distinctive from others temple in Bali. According to Lontar Babad Mengwi, a noble man, I Gusti Putu or as the local people calls as I Gusti Agung Sakti, established the temple in 1634.
The Facility on Ulun Danu Temple
The very first time, visitors will enter the front gate and see the unique Balinese temple which has layer tower called meru. In the temple area, there are some tiered towers with different purpose. The 11 tiered is dedicated to worship Dewa Wisnu, 7 tier to Dewa Brahma, and 3 tier to Dewa Siwa.
Due to its location which is slightly lower than the lake, the ground of this beautiful temple sometimes is filled with water. This moment is the best view because it gives the illusion as if the temple is in the center of the lake.
While enjoying the historical tourism, visitors can also rent a motor or traditional boat to have a short round on the lake; it takes only 25,000 IDR for about 25 minutes. There are also some extreme sports such as parasailing, banana boat, or Jet Ski for those who love adventurous sport. Visitors can also spend their time to fish under the bamboo trees and rent fishing tools for only 5,000 IDR. Ulun Danu Temple is opened daily from 8 am to 6 pm but if the weather is cloudy, the temple will closed earlier to prevent from unexpected accident. Visitor does not need to pay much to visit this gorgeous temple, only 7,500 IDR for local tourist and 10,000 IDR for foreign tourist.
